One man convinced 200 Ku Klux Klan members to give up their robes (2017)
- RecycledEle 3y agoCan anyone name one person who was listed on Wikipedia as being active in the KKK (from June of 1908 on) who was not on the FBI payroll while they were active in the KKK?

- delichon 3y agoLet's find one of the remaining statues of a rebel civil war hero, and instead of tearing it down, add a statue of Daryl Davis next to it, with a smile and his arm around it.

- laidoffamazon 3y agoI think it's great that Daryl Davis was able to befriend 200 KKK members. But it's not the onus of black people - or Jews, or Asians, or anyone else that KKK members hate - to make the KKK like them. It's on the racists to join America.

- ghufran_syed 3y agoThe humans should definitely be responsible for making their world a better place
- Georgelemental 3y agoIf you want to society to change in the way you want, it's on you to advocate for it and convince other people. It's not going to happen otherwise.
- laidoffamazon 3y agoThere are far fewer KKK members than black people in America. Why should I go out of my way to comfort them?
- autoexec 3y agoWhen racists come around it tends to be the result of meaningful exposure to the people they were trained to hate and having at least one person outside of their usual racist circle willing to accept them. The view that anyone who has ever so much as uttered a racist word a decade ago should be ostracized and unemployable for the rest of their lives seems counterproductive if the goal is to reduce racism rather than punish racists. Not everybody has the time or the temperament to befriend a racist, but we should make it clear that it's the ignorant ideology and not the individual that is the problem and that being abandoned by their old friends won't mean never being accepted by anyone else.
- tdb7893 3y agoI don't think your take is controversial in any of the left wing circles I've been in (I think most people remember the terrible things they said while teenagers and understand people change). A lot of the thing with jobs is just corporate PR being very risk averse and Twitter users and people reading the news love drama. Also, people need to actually change. I've had friends who were transphobic I had to stop being friends with (not that I completely ostracized them but I stopped inviting them to things) because it wouldn't be fair to my trans friends to have them around.
- devwastaken 3y agoModern "anti racism" is the puritan moral cycle reaching apex. alt culture becomes the norm and rejects alt beliefs, alt culture becomes the norm and rejects alt beliefs - and so on. Free thinking, intellectualism, basics of honesty and truth become only suggestions when moral feelings are involved. Puritanism is defined by its reactionary and emotionally manipulative position. It has a focus on punishment that perpetuates the cycle. It's drama, it makes people feel good that they "punished" others because it gives them egotistical power. It is also why this phenomenon is so widely gripping the U.S. and not elsewhere.
- Log_out_ 3y agoCompliance out of fear is not reform, it's a temporary change of appearance, till critical mass is reached and suddenly the hidden becomes the norm.
