I seem to recall Scientific American had some similar allure via some small math/comp-sci article somewhere near the back pages? Possibly A. K. Dewdney's "Computer Recreations" and "Mathematical Recreations" column [1]? I think it was the first place I came across CAs and the concept of computer viruses.
