Fake academic papers are on the rise: why they're a danger and how to stop them
- fxtentacle 3y agoIsn't fake everything on the rise, because that's OpenAI's business model?
- Grimblewald 3y agoThe question is why is a community supposedly dedicated to truth and quality of information falling victim to this? The likely answer is what we're all expecting, the publish or perish culture put in place by major publishing houses and the pressure that puts on academics to maintain their livelihoods will cause some to cave under the pressure and pursue darker paths, and this is just another marker of that.
- czzr 3y agoThe “publish or perish” culture has been put in place by academics themselves, the major publishers are just beneficiaries of that.
- PeterStuer 3y agoThere's 2 problems mixed in here: 1) Quantitative metric evaluation in academia which became defacto in the 90's resulted in the 'publish or perish' hellscape of modern university "research". 2) traditional peer review just does not work good enough as a trusted gatekeeper/curator, and has been compromised in many ways.
- foldr 3y agoPeer review is often touted as a highly rigorous process, but it's always been an honor system that relies on most of its participants being basically honest and well-intentioned. Once the element of cutthroat competition is introduced, those assumptions become far less safe.
- ecoquant 3y agoIt almost like people wrote about a replication crisis a decade ago.
