If this is correct, it's still worth understanding!
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
However, on the whole, I am glad to have more than one political system in the world, more than one political philosophy, and I don't want 100% of the world to be capitalist democracies. Monocultures are brittle, and with diverse systems, we can all learn from each other.
Even very bad systems (Stalin, Hitler, or name your other horrible dictator) often have good ideas somewhere -- perhaps in some economic policy, in some organizational structure, or otherwise -- and even if not, are worth studying to avoid the same mistakes.
My general feelings about China are generally:
1) I'm glad to visit
2) I would not want to live there
3) It seems to be improving, on the whole (despite backsliding in some areas)
4) I'm glad they're there and experimenting with a different system
I have limits, and there are many systems I wouldn't say this for, but my line is pretty far out for how much diversity I'll tolerate.
- tuatoru 3y agoThe impression I get from the review is that China's elite suffers collectively from schizophrenia and delusions of grandeur. Napoleon is apposite: “the enemy is making a false move, why should we interrupt him?”.
- blagie 3y agoI don't think that impression is accurate. Look at plots of: - Chinese per-capita GDP - Chinese overall GDP - Quality of education systems worldwide - Chinese current military power - Manufacturing might to support the above, if placed on a war footing. I'm not sure China is the enemy (and that's not a leading statement -- relations are ambiguous, and I'm genuinely not sure of where they are or will head) That said, every nation makes many false moves, many true ones, and many more in between. For all the things China is doing [right / wrong], there are just as many which are the opposite.
