I've worked as a founder or employee a variety of startups from conception seed to series C to pre-IPO to post-IPO. This has been true in every case - urgency is all that matters. The startup or project dies as soon as it becomes business as usual. Contributors get bored, inspiration fades away, people find other ways to fill their time.
Someone gave me this advice when I started my first company. I was in my mid 20s and time felt limitless, so I didn't take it seriously. Now, working on my second company I'm obsessive about momentum and milestones. It's why I like raising VC rather than bootstrapping. Why not give yourself the chance to make something big and impactful 10 times throughout your life? (age 65 - age 25 / 3 year cycles)
