Google is starting to squash more spam and AI in search results
- sznio 3y agoI did feel it getting better. A few days ago I got actually useful search results with websites from 2004, not just recent AI slop.
- realusername 3y agoThey are waking up now that there's AI competition but maybe it's too late already, its been years that they've lost the spam war.
- mediumsmart 3y agoI think they won the spam war ages ago but AI might take the lead now, true.
- realusername 3y agoI think the opposite, they gave up years ago against spam and it shows on the declining quality even long before current LLMs. Google became comfortable having a revenue stream based on the top ads and didn't care much what was going down below. They spent more money on Safari to keep their market share than they did on search engineering. Now AI changes everything, it means that the very existence of this revenue stream is threaten by competitors and having relevant results once again matters. They are now racing against this time lost but I think it's already too late for that.

- littlecranky67 3y agoEven pre-ChatGPT era, Google was bad at filtering out SEO spam. For that reason I switched years ago to Duck, and nowadays Kagi. Google got so bad at their own core business that I can't understand why it is still the No. 1 search engine.
- littlecranky67 3y agoThere is a business incentive in not filtering out SEO spam: If your competitor is ranked as No. 1 on Google search results for a keyword, you can either invest in SEO spam yourself, or buy Google Ads, which will show you ontop of your competitor.
- fakedang 3y agoRIP all those AI driven SEO startups.
