The industrial revolution, mass communications, and the internet killed peasantry. We are their replacement.
In that age, church, state, cold and hunger were the oppressors. After a brief flowering of popular education, now we have unlimited personalized passive entertainment, fast fashion, doom-scrolling and internet memes.
Result? The old oppressors are selling off their assets. New gold rushes are in attention, convenience, medicine and abstract fiscal acrobatics. One wonders if there is a next stage, or if we are doomed to hone the arts of doublespeak and externalizing costs.
Repeat after me children: representative democracy.
