- ajuc 3y agoNo, they did it bilaterally (with Russia) because France didn't mind. This is the problem with EU.
- p_l 3y agoBecause even the countries publicly opposing might have ultimately voted for, or fucked up their vote. For example on Nord Stream 2, there was a polish vote "yes", despite there being a lot of very public opposition from the government to it - NS2 was regularly used as part of scaremongering tactics about germans.
- ajuc 3y agoCould you link the vote you mentioned? AFAIR Poland blocked it several times, including in 2015 and 2021. I googled a bit and couldn't see any EU vote in which Poland supported Nord Stream 2.
- p_l 3y agoI will dig it out - it was effectively deep in the minutiae of arranging framework plans (which are nonetheless important for setting future direction of big infrastructure projects like this). It wasn't only vote, but by being careless earlier I think at least polish representatives reduced our chances of blocking NS2
