AI Talent Is in Demand as Other Tech Job Listings Decline
- Bostonian 3y agohttps://archive.is/VCQxP https://archive.is/VCQxP Subtitle: "Postings for artificial-intelligence-related roles are growing and touting higher pay" When a field is hot, I wonder how well employers distinguish between people who are knowledgeable about the field, as opposed to having put the buzzwords on their resume.
- Nasrudith 3y agoI think it depends entirely on how much the screener knows about the field itself. If they are just going off of the "pop culture" they are pretty much doomed to be unable to distinguish the two. If they are deep in the workings of ML themselves then they should be able to tell the difference between "just throwing AI related buzzwords in there" and "actually knows intimate details of how it works". Vexxingly even the competent people may have been trained to seed their resumes with nonsense to get past the uneducated screeners or heavens forbid, automated keyword screeners.
- mistrial9 3y agoin a strange twist, screening job application paperwork is exactly a major use-case for AI now, and actual job interviews using AI (not a person) are increasing. Labor-type jobs, including skilled labor, seem to be exactly a target for capital-backed AI companies. Meanwhile, "increased job listings" inevitably recalls the case of Zillow. While Zillow executives were amassing real estate portfolios and enabling others to do so, on a large scale using their own platform, there was a very well-publicized job advertisement for "data scientists" .. in the new field at the time, it was exciting to a lot of people... a LOT of people.. Zillow hired a small handful of data scientists, for a total amount of money that was almost nothing compared to the asset portfolios being bandied about internally.. and those data scientists were.. let go? Where is Zillow now? It is almost certain that the real estate and their new owners were not "fired". It appears to be a morality play story about this whole AI publicity push... massive capital behind the scenes, allocated however it is allocated.. with publicity reserved for "job creation" in the single digits, and like facial recognition, used more against "job seekers" than for the few that get employed.
