Glad to see the pendulum swinging back on DEI. Being racist against "the right people" is, and always will be, racism. I don't know if Google's culture is too broken to fix but they really seem to be the corporate equivalent of Kuwait. They have a serious resource curse and with that resource in jeopardy, the question of whether they can innovate and productize is basically an existential one now.
- ninininino 3y agoIt's a common mistake to assume that Trust and Safety is primarily about enforcing rules around hate speech or committing wrongthink. Anti-scam (pig butchering) is commonly the most important function, removing users who have used online services to facilitate real world crimes like physical violence, sexual assault, money laundering, or theft is also arguably the most important because of the seriousness of what it represents even if the volume of infractions is relatively lower, fraud or automating user activity for purposes of advertising, pushing agendas, astroturfing, state actor stuff, etc. I'll give you though that it would be simpler to form an opinion around Trust and Safety if we had more generally understood finer-grained terms for the function though, perhaps separating the stuff I mentioned from the stuff you probably assume Google is focused on with their TNS into two separate terms. Crime and fraud prevention vs community health or something. It's certainly an opaque industry.
- j45 3y agoJust for understanding, what exactly does your use of “the right people” mean, and who is it referring to? This article didn’t mention DEI. It mentioned 10 out of 250 people being affected. There is a reference to AI so maybe heads are rolling from the issues with Gemini. https://archive.is/UL4VO https://archive.is/UL4VO Again, not sure what “the right people” means. Are you sure such comments aren’t an axe looking for a stone to grind against?
- throw7 3y agoI'm sure its a reference to our black founding fathers. You don't have to wonder too hard to answer what "AI" is telling on itself.
- wand3r 3y agoI am not a Google employee but my comment is referring to the prolific reports that at Google trust & safety is basically DEI enforcement. The All In podcast does a deeper dive on Google culture and how the trust and safety department actually operates but it is not the only reporting on this. It seems like from the outside Google is captured by the "oppressor/oppressed" idealogy so the right people are read as "oppressors" in my comment above.
- tennisflyi 3y agoIt’s just a placeholder…
- TurkishPoptart 3y agoYep. Took me a while to learn that "Trust and Safety" is just a placeholder for Orwellian woke political crankery.
