Starting around 2016, I noticed our young interns had no compunctions about finding and using unlicensed streaming sites. Most of them are women.
Just recently, I overheard one all-girl group lamenting the balance between buying the laptops they liked versus gaming laptops, and that they'd all settled on streaming from their or their partners' PCs and consoles at home. I asked if The Sims was really that performance intensive, and they said, "Oh, no, BG3."
Listening to them talk about quest lines, battle and party strats, how and where to get certain characters and fashion, it reminded me exactly of conversations I'd had with my friends (over the same franchise, even) in the 90s and 00s. It makes me wonder how or if our parents ever felt like we were their kids with how different the world became in such a short time with the internet. And here they are now, all born after 9/11, the smartphone and internet age, with high bandwidth ubiquitous, instantaneous global connectivity, and I don't know why I ever thought they might be different.
- gwervc 3y agoThe heartwarming thing in your post is they are still using PC. Recently, I put the PDF of an old reference book on a server for a friend to download and gave him the link on facebook messenger. He replied the link doesn't open. I told him to try on a PC. A week later at the pub he told me he hadn't tried yet because he seldom use his computer. I was shocked someone could pass a whole week without using a PC.
- pcthrowaway 3y ago"PC" is so meaningless nowadays, I have no idea if you mean your friend didn't try to open it on a Windows computer, or just a non-mobile device.
- leosanchez 3y agoI am guessing he meant either Laptop or a Desktop regardless of OS.
- dotnet00 3y agoTo be fair, a link to a pdf should also open fine on a mobile device, assuming that facebook messenger isn't messing with the link in some way.
