> Electric motors and inverters are hell on AM radios. They create a lot of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Even though automakers want to get rid of AM radios in their EVs, EMI expert Joanna McLellan says they can fix the problem easily and cheaply.
TL;DW: Motors and other systems are designed badly, RF leakages are not a consideration or given proper weightage; and then once the system is done, they try to cover the leak with shielding, because the systems are already designed and sent for manufacturing, so too late to change.
The reason she says is because this kind of thing is not in usual EE curriculums, since this is something usually beyond the core scope of their studies, and motor/system designers also don't want to spend time/money on this.
She suggests that in the designing stage, spend the time and money to take into consideration RF leaks also, and just add the required resistor in the first place, so the leak doesn't occur at all, instead of trying and failing to cover it up with shields.
This will allow AM radios to work without issue, and also help motor longevity.
