Ask HN: Selling proprietary trading project code base?
Worked on a prop trading project for about 5 years first in crypto and then the regulated market. Developed large code base in c++ including strategies, trading application, backtesting, visualisation and ingesting tools. Despite having found some strategies that seemed promising in experiments never managed to build track record to raise capital. I traded my own capital day to day and had colocation at the exchange. Invested a lot of time and money. Eventually put it on the back burner. I was trading medium to high frequency horizon. Any ideas how I could monetise this or auction it off?

- b20000 3y agosee above … to share a little more detail: every time i developed a new strategy it would make money the first few days then lose money, and i did not have enough runway to keep going and determine if over the course of a month it would consistently keep making money. so my lack of capital made it hard to experiment.
- streetcat1 3y agoSo why you don't change strategy after the first few days? I.e. why don't you stop the strategy as soon as it starts to lose?
- b20000 3y agothat is what I did. So I developed a new strategy, then the same thing happened. After a few times of experiencing the same I put the project on the backburner because I lacked funds to keep going.
- streetcat1 3y agoSo can't you use Leverage? If the software is already working what kind of funds do you need to keep going?
- b20000 3y agoif a strategy is profitable for a few days and then loses money then you have to decide how long you want to keep running it to be statistically confident that it does not work and does not mirror the behaviour you saw in backtesting. if it turns out you need to keep running it for a month and each day it loses 3k and you don’t have 90k to risk then you have to pull the plug. keep in mind this is just running the strategy. colocation and data also cost money for example.
