Threads widens the gap with X, with triple the daily downloads on iOS

- thomastay 3y agoI really wish there was another platform than the app formerly known as Twitter, where AI discourse is thriving. Because right now, it seems that AI papers, discussions and articles are all being shared there first. Threads might be a competitor for that but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
- wincy 3y agoFacebook showed me “what I’m missing” on Threads the other day and it was literally pages of pictures of women and “Netflix and Chill?” Not a single real person, or maybe I’ve just really underestimated my worth on the market and young single women are knocking down my door trying to hook up with me. Edit: to be clear I was logged into my Facebook and Facebook knows a lot about me and serves me ads that are incredibly well targeted (it’s the only service that serves ads for stuff I actually want to buy), but the Threads topics they chose to show me in their pitch to get me to use Threads were as bad as the old penis enlargement ads of yore.
- MattGaiser 3y agoThose seem to be what is all over any social media I access without an account/on a new IP for the first time. Twitter, new Facebook profile for modding a few pages, Threads, and even Reddit.
- malshe 3y agoGood to know that I’m not the only one who was shown useless content on Threads. Half the posts were from Facebook developers bitching about Apple. The other half were from unknown women who were complaining about something I had no interest in. Never went back after that.
- DinaCoder99 3y agoWouldn't actual usage be more relevant than app downloads? I certainly know many people who still use twitter, but I can't say the same about threads.
- malshe 3y agoAbsolutely. I asked my academic friends and many told me that they still use X although may not post there often. Interestingly a bunch of my friends are using Bluesky.
- DinaCoder99 3y agoYea, I think that Bluesky is far more likely to inherent the good parts of Twitter/X than Threads, if only for a far more flexible moderation policy.
