This is my layman's perspective, but it seemed bound to happen. The biggest risk from covid when it was novel appeared to be mass susceptibility and causing overflow in treatment centers and hospitals. Now it seems enough people's immune systems have developed to the point where it won't be as viral in the general population reducing spread and impact. I'm glad vaccines were available to ease us to this point.
