In the link related to Geoff being fired from CSS Tricks:

That's one of the wisest approaches to life: having multiple sources of income so that in case you're laid off, it won't affect you that much -at least financially.
- 3D30497420 3y agoTotally, and something I'm trying to cultivate, but man is it a lot of work. Plus, its probably not even feasible for most people (kids, lack of savings to invest, etc.) I'm lucky to have the time and money (more or less) to try to diversify my income, but I also am a bit annoyed that I need to in order to feel secure.
- xk_id 3y agoIt should go far beyond money- the things that make you get up in the morning should be as many and as diverse as possible. Having enough stuff going on, even if you become poor, or sad, or lonely.
