The absolute most nightmarish situation you could possibly imagine is the overnight batch cycle running late or even worse, having some portion of it not complete. I've been involved in the cleanup of those sorts of issues many times, they tend to be incredibly complicated chains of hundreds of programs from all different departments, and there is not a modern concept of a single cohesive "application" that runs.
