To be fair, the audience for movies and books simply aren't the same. If you tried to fully faithfully adapt LotR, you'd have Alex Jones proclaiming the frogs got to Tom Bombadil and turned him into a dirty liberal hippie. It would just be too confusing/weird for on-screen. I'd watch it on repeat until I turned into that skeleton waiting meme.
