They’re commonly described as martyrs in and outside Palestine. If you read witness accounts from Gaza you will come across the word often. It’s an accurate term.
- AnimalMuppet 3y ago> It’s an accurate term. It's an accurate translation, but it's not an accurate term. A martyr is one who willingly gives their life for their faith. Being killed because you were standing in the wrong place may make you a victim of a massacre, but it doesn't make you a martyr.
- wahnfrieden 3y agoEveryone understands what you’re saying. It has multiple definitions in use. You picked one that doesn’t fit. It does not necessarily mean the victims were militants no. It is also an Islamic concept.
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> has multiple definitions in use Sure, but when translated into international English, calling them martyrs makes them sound like fallen militants. If they were martyrs as commonly construed, the IDF may have been justified. If they were unarmed civilians, this is a different story. Not saying it's incorrect, just a potentially misleading element of regional dialect.
