I don't think learning to map characters to alphabet letters is hard. I'm sure there are written languages in use that only have vowels and consonant but are still extremely complex, but generally what we see here is just mapping a known set of shapes to a new set of shapes. It's learning what to say when you are faced with these characters that is difficult.
