I think this is a nice contrast to the usual articles about OSS funding which are often along the lines of, "but I donate thousands of hours of my time to open source that ends up in big commercial products and cloud platforms, why won't anyone pay me for it?" I believe Daniel Stenberg (of curl fame) had a nice blog article on how he was able to transition to working on his open source projects full-time, but I'm unable to find it now.
