Plans to heat districts with datacenters may prove too hot to handle

- bradley13 3y agoIt's an interesting idea, and certainly environmentally beneficial. However, this should focus just on data centers. Any such regulation should apply equally to any large user of electricity. Nearly all electrical power winds as waste heat, after doing its bit of useful work. Whether it's making cement, smelting aluminum, manufacturing gizmos, or running a data center - lots of things produce MWh or even GWh of waste heat. If the local city has district heating, large-scale users should be required to put their waste heat into the system. Use that energy twice! You can pay them market rate for the heat. If it costs them a bit extra to set up the necessary equipment, well, that's just a cost of doing business.
