Barcelona put some metro lines in one huge tunnel with the tracks stacked and the stations fitting in the tunnels. It seems like tunnels scale with the number of boring machines.
- rsynnott 3y agoI mean, I assume there's a reason Glasgow's stupid miniature subway (its tunnels are even a little smaller than the magic car tunnels, only 3.4m) is as it is. But the idea that there are _substantial_, tunnel-economics-changing savings seems dubious.
- ianburrell 3y agoThe economics were much different when digging out tunnels by hand with tunneling shield. The other factor is that stations tend to be the big cost because they are dug separately. The Vegas system has a ton of stations, and I haven't seen any reason why those would be cheap.
