GitHub Copilot Enterprise is now generally available
- efraglebaggga 3y agoHow is everyone's experience with it? Personally, we were very excited at the prospect of this feature. We're a rather small organization but upgraded to enterprise to get it. Very underwhelming so far. Loads of answers are some form of "without specific knowledge of the structure of you repository, I can't provide more detailed instrucitons" When it does answer some more generic questions (e.g. "what does this package do?") - Copilot starts looking up some random barely related code and random tests rather then the actual code. Where it does succeed is something contained and specific e.g. "I'd like to add a flag to mark our favorite clients". It correctly finds the ORM parts that need to be edited and suggests mostly valid code. However, from a developer perspective - having rudimentary knowledge of the codebase is enough to solve this faster via search than to use the chat interface. Lastly, it looks like there is no built in support for VS Code Copilot. I suppose it's only temporary, but nevertheless for a product that is supposed to help with day to day developer activity it feels like it's a major missing feature. Switching back and forth between web interface and development interface to get some guidance is really not that helpful. We're yet to evaluate if it does any better on PRs than it did without Enterprise. Overall, based on a single day of usage, I'd probably downgrade. We'll keep testing for at least a month though. I do believe this is the eventual future of developer tooling just feels way too raw to provide any tangible value. For context: all of the above is against a Python codebase. It's also a monorepo which _might_ complicate things for Copilot.
