Boomer here. In my twenties I had to return home and live my parents to save enough money to go to school. Highly suggest that grouping people by their generation and making blanket statements about them should be avoided. This is something done quite frequently by my own generation and is a mistake you should not repeat.
- silverquiet 3y agoYou should always be careful to treat people as individuals, but it is worth considering that people who have come of age and lived through different periods of history will be shaped differently and have different views of the world. Interestingly, I have seen my own boomer parents grow more cynical over the last few years. Particularly my mother who's lifelong employer was bought by private equity a few years ago. She used to have a nearly-unbreakable work ethic, but is now riding out the clock until she can get laid off with severance. I tell her welcome to the millennial treatment. So take heart Gen Z, eventually they may get the treatment they thought was reserved for the younger generations.
- BirbSingularity 3y agoThe fact you equate that experience as being anything close to what Gen Z is experiencing kinda proves the point of the post. Unless you went to the most expensive school possible, it would have cost you a couple hundred hours of work to afford your education. When you graduated, you were most likely able to afford to either buy a home, or live on your own using your income alone, right out of college, if not shortly afterwards. All of those experiences are not possible for the vast majority of Gen Z individuals. For Gen Z to pay for four years of college they would have to work over 15,000 hours over 4 years. That's about 73 hours a week at the average pay rate in the US. There is nowhere an average income can afford someone to live alone. Homes your generation got for 20 to 50k are now in the 500K+ range. So yea, I 100% agree that boomers will never understand.
- strangattractor 3y agoJust as you'll never understand Boomers I guess. None of those things you stated are true of my case. I could not afford a home until I was 42 and I did it with a partners help.
