From an outside perspective (I have always been a macOS/Linux guy) it was another attempt at deprecating the juggernaut that is win32. They have plenty of good reasons to do so, but they failed at making it something devs actually wanted to use. It was kinda like Wayland where functionality devs needed for some apps wasn't available. It didn't help that they quickly abandoned UWP after efforts to make mobile windows a thing failed. Everyone is making cloud-native and cross-platform stuff these days, so why make another platform-dependent app that isn't even pleasant to use?
Apple pulled off SwiftUI because it was legitimately better, and Apple made it clear you either get on the bus or it's leaving. Maybe Microsoft needs MAUI to do the same, but that would sacrifice the one thing that makes enterprises continue to use Windows.
