What is the Universal Windows Platform? (2021)
- jahnu 3y agoWell for me UWP was a broken promise by Microsoft. Years of hard work half wasted because they promised it was the only future of Windows but then they themselves didn’t take it seriously.
- nathanaldensr 3y agoUWP is a disaster, is what it is. Not that WPF, Windows Forms, MFC, and Win32 are any better, of course. If I had to choose a Microsoft UI tech for a Windows app nowadays, I'm going with WPF. If I could choose any tech at all, I'd probably pick Electron.
- a_vanderbilt 3y agoFrom an outside perspective (I have always been a macOS/Linux guy) it was another attempt at deprecating the juggernaut that is win32. They have plenty of good reasons to do so, but they failed at making it something devs actually wanted to use. It was kinda like Wayland where functionality devs needed for some apps wasn't available. It didn't help that they quickly abandoned UWP after efforts to make mobile windows a thing failed. Everyone is making cloud-native and cross-platform stuff these days, so why make another platform-dependent app that isn't even pleasant to use? Apple pulled off SwiftUI because it was legitimately better, and Apple made it clear you either get on the bus or it's leaving. Maybe Microsoft needs MAUI to do the same, but that would sacrifice the one thing that makes enterprises continue to use Windows.
