Windows 11 laptop Snapdragon X Elite shows CPU that's serious threat to Apple M3
- WhereIsTheTruth 3y agoI'll repeat what i said earlier Yet to be released chip only very slightly better than 1 year old chips The press can't realize this yet
- _mlbt 3y agoAlso, real world speeds will be even slower for most users because unlike on M1 Macs, most software is still x86/x64 and will need to be run under translation to ARM. This is understandably a chicken and the egg problem of course because software developers see no need to port their Windows software to ARM due to its very low market share.
- johnklos 3y agoOh, the press know. They also know that gimmicky headlines get clicks.
- rsynnott 3y agoIn this case, slightly worse; it's 20% slower than an M3 Pro (though the naming implies that maybe they're aiming more at the Max or Ultra end of the market, in which case maybe it's a lot worse?)
- gorkish 3y agoCan it do the x86 TSO trick? There won't be much of a windows-on-arm ecosystem until Microsoft can fix their slow-ass emulation.
- w0z_ 3y agoSERIOUS THREAT.
- snakeyjake 3y ago19% slower doesn't meet very many definitions of "serious threat".
- k8svet 3y agoQualcomm waited just long enough to get decent Linux support going. Now instead of buying a capable Aarch64 laptop as soon as possible, Qualcomm has to compete with the fact that I can perfectly play Halo from Linux on x86_64-linux via Proton.
- simjnd 3y agoKeep an eye on FEX-Emu, soon enough you'll be able to play x64 Halo on an aarch64 Linux machine
- k8svet 3y agoI sort of know how things these go, so I know it would be a guess, but I'm curious how soon you think even kicking the tires on it would be. It's hard for me to get a feel when I've looked at the couple of userspace translate-y emus. edit: Wow, the Monster Hunter demo from two weeks ago is mighty impressive.
- kotaKat 3y ago"Serious threat" until you find out that it won't match power-per-watt of the M3, or very likely whatever else Apple already has in the pipeline. IIRC the SXE is only getting its rumored performance running at some 50-80W of power usage?
- smcleod 3y agoAnd it’ll be running windows. I cannot imaging having to use that again - it feels so backwards.
- tssva 3y agoAnd I can’t imagine having to run macOS again.
- gtvwill 3y agoYeah but all they have to do is make it the slightest bit upgradeable or repairable and it'll leave apple in the dust with respect to ethical production.
