This is always how the iOS ecosystem was marketed and one of the reasons I personally give Apple my money. If the EU is taking that away, I solely blame the EU.

- rxyz 3y agoThey arent taking that away. No one is going to force you to sideload because most people won't sideload. Only a few Android apps aren't on the play store even though sideloading is very easy.
- razakel 3y agoAnd they tend to be ones that Google isn't happy with, like ad-free YouTube clients.
- akmarinov 3y agoThankfully, Apple doesn't own YouTube. What they don't like is porn and gambling.
- freedomben 3y agoand apps that have their own Stripe account and/or want to tell customers that they can save 30% by paying through the website, or pay 30% more to use the Apple subscription/payments system. But user education and market competition would mean Apple's 30% is way, way too much, so hardly anybody would actually do that if they had the choice...
- yreg 3y agoThey love gambling, it just has to be wrapped in virtual lootboxes.
- jamil7 3y agoI’d guess the majority of the things you like about the security model are things that would still work with side loading.
- paulmd 3y agowhat aspects of sideloading prevent Facebook from starting their own App Store and saying “give us full permissions to mine your microphone and email for marketing or you don’t get to use Facebook”? (and yes, apple is still doing review but people object to that part too, right?) there are no technological solutions to social problems, and the network power of Facebook/etc is a social problem.
- jamil7 3y ago> what aspects of sideloading prevent Facebook from starting their own App Store and saying “give us full permissions to mine your microphone and email for marketing or you don’t get to use Facebook”? The OS already enforces gated access to the microphone through a permissions dialogue. Once it's enabled it's a glowing red, persistant status bar everywhere. Only one app can get a handle on this at a time, by design. I'm not sure what "mine your email" means, I'd imagine someone using Facebook has already given them their email. If you mean access to their email app's data, you also can't just reach into another app's files since they're sandboxed. There hasn't been any part of the discussion around sideloading that says Apple should also get rid of OS-level security and privacy features.
- c0n5pir4cy 3y agoI mean - nothing is stopping Apple from doing it like Android, where you specifically have to toggle to enable side loading in Apps.
- ngcc_hk 3y agoSame here. All these talks is fine for people who are good at IT or cannot pay, for people who can pay for their old relatives we want to an option of closed garden we feel safe. If Apple is started to forbidden speech etc I would object. But they support devices that is decade old and close to that. I am ok with the close garden, not as a programmer but as a IT support of my old relatives.
