I can sympathize with affirmative action when it started. In 1970 US was about 87% white, 11% black, 1% asian, and less than 1% mixed.
There wasn't that much immigration from Africa, so it was pretty clear who was descended from American slaves.
Now 10% of the US is two or more races, there is a much higher amount of asian people, a high number of people that count as white (middle eastern) but otherwise are treated as minorities. The whole system seems farcical for an admissions office to factor in which racial ancestry is worth of a bonus and white is worth of a subtraction.
