I’ve worked for companies they had big layoffs and big acquisitions in the same year.
These generally involved getting rid of seasoned employees with broad experience in the company’s products, while the company purchased some shiny new thing that they don’t understand and will never properly integrate even after 5 years. Meanwhile the CEO enjoyed 8 figure compensation, despite having no past industry experience or clue.
This. Happened. Every. Single. Year.

A non-businessman in an executive position knows they can't do that but often gets a better short-term bottom line by using established resources to make nothing out of something. These are not better returns, they are better results which can be the closest some people are ever going to get. Naturally it takes longer to make something out of nothing than it does to make nothing out of something. To each their own limitation, but when the amount of established value that can be quickly extracted far exceeds the amount of potential new value that can quickly be added, the integrity of the executives has always been what decides which direction the business is moving in when it comes to real value.
