Resin printers are great. They are cheap, the resolution / feature size for the cost of the system and materials is amazing. You do need to deal with quite a bit of mess.
The 3D printing in the article is pretty different though. The “how, where, what, and when” of material or “ink” deposition is all square in the crosshairs of bleeding edge 3D printing, especially in biotech.
Building stuff up in roughly the same way layer by layer is definitely something that will see a lot of improvements in efficiency and expansion, but there are so many variables to control and experiment with in this space that will need significantly different kinds of machines to enable.

Software is an issue too, but hopefully there’s a way to hijack whatever Preform does. As for mess, I got a Form Wash and Form Cure, so odor is the only issue. But we’re planning to stick the whole thing in a grow tent if it’s a problem. https://youtu.be/IIWEV9AM8-k?si=cKyJR0caBu8s3odo https://youtu.be/IIWEV9AM8-k?si=cKyJR0caBu8s3odo shows the full setup.

You can use any substance with a printer that the hardware and software supports and then some. But your common DLP or galvo resin printer is just going to be for light-cured baths.
