If they wanted to get to the bottom of this being true or not, they have the resources to do it on effectively a whim by asking their team to look into its veracity. Rubs me the wrong way that they aren't proactively saying "we will look into the veracity of these claims", instead their response puts the impetus on the person / people most affected and thus may feel they be in worse circumstances if they say anything in the first place.
