I'm a bit of a AI skeptic myself but, LLMs are truly useful. I can now ask Google to answer my question, rather than just ask it to find me web-pages that contain information about a given topic.
The old Google is like a school, you go there to learn something but you really don't know what you need to learn because you don't know what there is to learn, or even what would be useful for you to learn. The keywords you enter into old Google search are like picking the name of a class or course you decide to take because you think it might be useful to you. You want to learn more about a given topic.
Whereas the new AI/LLM -based search is like asking a specific question from the professor because you know that you want to, and need to, know the answer to that specific question.
AI-based search is thus getting knowledge you know you need on demand, whereas old Google is about general learning about a given topic.
Naturally on-demand information is much more valuable, it is valuable to you because you need the answer right now, not maybe next year when you have graduated from your school.
Schools of course are needed as much as ever, because you can only become a professor by going to school yourself. But LLM AI is revolutionary in this respect, that it is like a professor, like a doctor, like a lawyer.
LLM-AI is useful, I don't care whether it is "true AI", or not.
It does allow us to interact with the machine like we would with a human. Imagine trying to interact with a human the same way you interacted with the old Google: Utter a keyword to your friend and wait to see if something useful comes out.

A: "While there are 54 recognized countries in Africa, none of them begin with the letter "K". The closest is Kenya, which starts with a "K" sound, but is actually spelled with a "K" sound. It's always interesting to learn new trivia facts like this." https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F9ZFrD6aYAAmi-z?format=png&name=900x900 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F9ZFrD6aYAAmi-z?format=png&name=...
- galaxyLogic 3y agoGood point, and we know the current crop of AI does make mistakes, is not perfect by any means. AI needs more training.
