Cutting off US companies from China would be impractical, since a lot of US companies do a lot of business with China. A large fraction of home appliances, clothing, etc. sold in the US comes from Chinese factories. For example, Apple needs to be able to communicate with Foxconn, which manufactures most of their iPhones and iPads in China.
