Discord took no action against server that coordinated Mastodon spam attacks
- yungporko 3y agoa few years ago i reported a full blown pedophilia server that was sharing amongst other horrifying things, a literal manual on how to lure and abuse children successfully and a recipe for making chloroform. i gathered evidence of this stuff and emailed screenshots/copies of it to discord, and they replied to me letting me know that i'm free to leave the server if i don't want to see that stuff. so yeah, that's discord for you.
- herbst 3y agoThere are hundreds of spam, scam, hacking, pedo, servers only used to communicate attacks to other discord users and share effective illegal content. Discord never cared. 12 year olds running their own Roblox scam imperium with thousands of users. 15 year old running crypto scams. It's wild west with no protection for the users. Why anyone uses that platform is beyond me.
- junon 3y agoThis sounds like a crackpot comment but I've witnessed it firsthand. Got some downright abhorrent content in my DMs from a bot that had joined a mutual server, sending me an invite link to a CP server. It included photos. I messaged Discord via their support line and even DMed them on Twitter. Reported the bot on Discord directly, through the interface. Nothing, no response. The content sat in my DMs without the user being banned for what felt like a year.
- herbst 3y agoThe same thing happens to children or other people that are less able to handle situations like that. I know I sound overly pessimistic but I don't know why that platforms is allowed to proceed with little to none moderation targeting children and teens.
- Ekaros 3y agoI'm not sure why anyone find it anyway surprising. If you allow people to make private communities for anything, they will make private communities for anything. Including the things some others disagree with. Same thing will happen on any platform that allows communities to form. And until we have our AI-run police state, nothing will stop it.
- herbst 3y agoYou aren't wrong. But for example telegram, it's also very open and widely ignores obvious issues. However when it comes to spam or scam accounts get banned very easily after a few reports. Something I haven't witnessed on discord.
