- samvanderjagt 3y agoHonestly, LEGO costs like one or two cents per brick. Not sure what the printing cost would be but I imagine it'd be at least somewhat similar...
- Tomte 3y agoBecause it has taken Chinese manufacturers using injection molding about ten years now to get in the ballpark of Lego levels of quality (especially friction and dimensional accuracy). Your 3D printer won‘t print a single adequate Lego brick in a million tries. Even Fischer Technik, a reputable company with many decades experience in construction sets (not Lego-like bricks), doesn‘t get close. I have so often had to swap a part with a notionally identical part, so that it actually stays in place. The correct way out, btw, is to buy used Lego.
- OkayPhysicist 3y agoYou cannot get adequate tolerances with 3D printers. Typical 3D printing tolerances are +-0.1mm. Lego bricks are trashed at the factory if they're off by more than 0.02mm, and 99.9% of pieces are within 0.001mm. This is crucial for making any brick connect to any other brick. You might be able to make a handful of bricks that connect to each other in 1 configuration on a 3D printer, but you're not going to be able to make multiple batches of bricks that fit together in any configuration.
