You can now rent Lego sets
- samvanderjagt 3y agoLEGO has gotten insanely expensive in recent years, and it's gotten out of reach for a lot of people. That's why I decided to create a LEGO rental service, where you can rent some of the best sets ever released for a fraction of the price of buying them. If you're nostalgic about your childhood LEGO fun, and you find it hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars, this might be the solution for you :)
- countWSS 3y agoWhy are people not 3D printing the legos? Is paying for lego sets some sort of "collecting hobby"? https://pick3dprinter.com/3d-print-lego/ https://pick3dprinter.com/3d-print-lego/
- samvanderjagt 3y agoHonestly, LEGO costs like one or two cents per brick. Not sure what the printing cost would be but I imagine it'd be at least somewhat similar...
- Tomte 3y agoBecause it has taken Chinese manufacturers using injection molding about ten years now to get in the ballpark of Lego levels of quality (especially friction and dimensional accuracy). Your 3D printer won‘t print a single adequate Lego brick in a million tries. Even Fischer Technik, a reputable company with many decades experience in construction sets (not Lego-like bricks), doesn‘t get close. I have so often had to swap a part with a notionally identical part, so that it actually stays in place. The correct way out, btw, is to buy used Lego.
- OkayPhysicist 3y agoYou cannot get adequate tolerances with 3D printers. Typical 3D printing tolerances are +-0.1mm. Lego bricks are trashed at the factory if they're off by more than 0.02mm, and 99.9% of pieces are within 0.001mm. This is crucial for making any brick connect to any other brick. You might be able to make a handful of bricks that connect to each other in 1 configuration on a 3D printer, but you're not going to be able to make multiple batches of bricks that fit together in any configuration.
- mtmail 3y agohttps://steinemieten.de https://steinemieten.de in Germany is similar in case you want to get some inspiration. On the ordering page you can select not to take it apart before sending back (cost 20 Euro extra). During Covid I looked at a couple of services. There was one with membership, like Netflix DVD model, where you can keep 1, 2 or 3 (depends on level) sets and they keep refreshing them. I found that pricing model too complicated.
