I have a section from a longer post about productivity in which I describe a “left-aligned” todo list. It’s something that has been independently implemented by a number of productive people. The key features:
- no due dates
- everything on the list is immediately actionable
- there’s a mechanism for regular rewriting
I use a moleskin with a page per day, listing things that I could do that day. One of my friends in college used a calendar, but wrote assignments on the day they were assigned, not the date they were due.
Most TODO-list apps are “right-aligned”: everything has a due date and items show up on the due date.
