My experience with those who claim to be denied some opportunity or other due to affirmative action is that they often aren't as good as they think they are. It's (ironically I suppose) just another victim narrative that people construct in order to preserve their ego. I'm sure we all do it in some form or other.
- PaulHoule 3y agoI will agree with that most of the time. But I will say I live near an exceptionally "liberal" town and we've had some real disasters in hiring that have come out of this kind of thinking. We went almost a decade without a permanent police chief which numerous screw-ups like hiring the one Asian who can't pass standardized tests (civil service exam) when certainly we had the talent in the department to do the job. In the case of weed in NY it is not so much about race as it is involvement in the criminal justice system. I have really tremendous respect for anyone who "goes straight" when they get out of prison and one of the few 501(c)3's I will donate to is one that helps offenders when they get out. On the other hand, someone with a criminal past is really going to do best in a place where there isn't a lot of monkey business going on and that's not what weed is in NY in 2024. That article is all about that story, see https://archive.ph/DMBrP https://archive.ph/DMBrP if the link above doesn't work for you.
