Legal Weed in New York Was Going to Be a Revolution. What Happened?
- PaulHoule 3y agoUnfortunately if they want to put wheels on "social justice" they have to deal with the antipathy that it has for quality and getting results. Otherwise a growing number of people are just going to give up on it. My Slack got changed so it would use the dark skinned emojis for things like "thumbs up" which I am not against at all except for the fact that the fingers are not distinct like the light skinned emoji because the contrast between the dark fingers and the line between the dark fingers. I'd imagine you could have a light outline around the dark fingers or find some other solution but unfortunately when the "social justice" meme is activated nobody cares about quality. I have a friend who grows grey market weed of the highest quality (better than what you can get at the legal dispensary) and also sells cuttings of plants you can use to grow your own and also makes edible products like gummies and a coconut oil-based tincture. He's a really smart guy and if he wants to learn to grow weed or something like that he goes and learns from the best and practices and soon he is one of the best. He's got great business skills and is active in a trade association for the industry. He still doesn't have a license and the licenses instead have been given to people who might be the victims of injustice but who don't have the talent and experience my friend has... And it's not like the recipients are growing 2nd or 3rd rate weed, it is that they are struggling to even get a product into dispensaries.
- silverquiet 3y agoMy experience with those who claim to be denied some opportunity or other due to affirmative action is that they often aren't as good as they think they are. It's (ironically I suppose) just another victim narrative that people construct in order to preserve their ego. I'm sure we all do it in some form or other.
- PaulHoule 3y agoI will agree with that most of the time. But I will say I live near an exceptionally "liberal" town and we've had some real disasters in hiring that have come out of this kind of thinking. We went almost a decade without a permanent police chief which numerous screw-ups like hiring the one Asian who can't pass standardized tests (civil service exam) when certainly we had the talent in the department to do the job. In the case of weed in NY it is not so much about race as it is involvement in the criminal justice system. I have really tremendous respect for anyone who "goes straight" when they get out of prison and one of the few 501(c)3's I will donate to is one that helps offenders when they get out. On the other hand, someone with a criminal past is really going to do best in a place where there isn't a lot of monkey business going on and that's not what weed is in NY in 2024. That article is all about that story, see https://archive.ph/DMBrP https://archive.ph/DMBrP if the link above doesn't work for you.
