I can think of a reason this problem is limited to GenZ: Millenials/X are more likely to be responsible for dependents or a house.
- benterix 3y agoIf this is true (I would think it might be) it leads to an interesting questions: when the decisive moment comes, will they choose long-time relationships and property or freedom?
- silverquiet 3y agoJudging by the precipitous declines in fertility, freedom seems like the most common choice. That's where I came down myself.
- phone8675309 3y agoThis is not a choice for many younger millennials and almost all gen-zers: ownership of property is mostly unobtainable to them. Big "my bank says I can't afford $1200 a month for a mortgage so I pay $1750 a month in rent" energy
- tiahura 3y agoEvery way of measuring suggests that Gen Z struggles with long term thinking and deferred gratification, so which do you think they’ll choose?
- sunshinerag 3y agoYou mean deferred pain. ? How are you sure there is gratification at end?
- benterix 3y agoWhat do you mean by "deferred" pain? It's not like you can have illnesses, old age and death first so that you can enjoy your youth and middle age comfortably.
- speff 3y agoIt's interesting that you would frame it as freedom rather than financial independence. Neither my wife nor my house has ever felt like a shackle to me.
- silverquiet 3y agoFinancial independence is the ultimate freedom; it's why everyone wants to be rich basically. Spouses can go either way on being dependents, children are more of the issue. Certainly equity in a house is a good thing, but getting onto the housing ladder gets ever harder and mortgage/taxes need to be continually serviced.
- pjc50 3y agoAs others have pointed out, economically they may not have the choice of property. & ""ghosting"" employers is undoubtedly driven by the requirement to do lots of applications. You hear of people with hundreds of applications in flight; keeping track of them is a job in itself.
