In the Western music scale there are mathematical reasons why there has to be some temperament, in other words some way of prioritizing some harmonies over others.
- adw 3y agoEqual temperament was, originally, what allowed us to build physical instruments which can be played in all keys; but as a _result_ of that, it's what allows us to write music which fluently changes key (beyond the relative minor or, at a push, the closest steps on the circle of fifths).
- resters 3y agoRight. I wish modern DAWs and digital instruments let the user choose from a wide variety of tunings. I'm not arguing that equal temperament is always what will sound the best for a particular composition.
- mutagen 3y agoThey do. For instance, Logic Pro https://support.apple.com/guide/logicpro/tuning-project-settings-lgcp452f2693/mac https://support.apple.com/guide/logicpro/tuning-project-sett... Many DAWs stay out of tunings and leave that for the individual virtual instruments. There's a standard for that named Scala (yes, also a language). https://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/ https://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/
- resters 3y agoThank you. I want to set it up for various temperaments and play some piano music through it live in each temperament (via my midi piano)
