I think it's a learned ability. My wife grew up in a country that you can't really get around without knowing your exact sense of direction. She can easily remember streets and directions without much trouble. I, on the other hand, used to navigate without GPS and had a much better sense of direction than I do now. I think GPS ruined it for me.
