My Backup System
- sph 3y agorestic is cool, I use it everywhere: on my workstation, on my Synology NAS and on my production servers. I used to use rsync, then tried borgbackup, which was slower than backing up to floppy disks, and buggier. I have also set it up for a client to backup proxmox and Nextcloud data files—and actually had to make sure everything worked when the servers caught fire. Their previous consultant set up a backup solution that had never been tested, and the first time they had to restore, they got the nasty surprise that all backups were corrupted. Always test your backups. Now, what I miss is my previous 3-2-1 strategy: I used to rsync my workstation to my NAS, and nightly I would sync my NAS with rsync.net's servers a few thousand miles away. Now I backup directly to rsync.net, so in case of restore I always have to suffer the network latency. Is there an efficient way of mirroring a restic repo off-site? Should I just rsync the entire restic repository? One note about TFA: the Telegram bot thing is neat, but one will tend to tune out any automated system that notifies you of every success, so if something bugs out you won't even notice it. What I do is simply curl my healthchecks.io URL for each successful backup. If my backups do not check in every 1 day (+ 1 day grace period) I get an email. Here is the script I use on my workstation: https://gist.github.com/1player/1133d10afb3b2730ea141adb162474d1 https://gist.github.com/1player/1133d10afb3b2730ea141adb1624... On servers and my NAS I use https://github.com/djmaze/resticker/ https://github.com/djmaze/resticker/ in a container. Here is the config: https://gist.github.com/1player/9ddf1b7993395fae87221a01e5c3505f https://gist.github.com/1player/9ddf1b7993395fae87221a01e5c3... (Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with rsync.net nor healthchecks.io. Just a happy user.)
- udev4096 3y agoYour strategy looks solid. Although, wouldn't it make more sense to use PBS for proxmox backups? I am using it for my proxmox instance. It's awesome and so easy to use Regarding rsync.net, I have never used it but looks like it's a third party backup storage solution. I think syncing the entire repo would be worth exploring. And about the bot, you're right. It needs quite a bit of improvement so that I get alerted of any kind of failures
