So everyone posing this question just gets "The mob voted China, so China it must be" and that's all well and good. Here's a better question: Why take on the challenge of organizing the awards/con in China if you oppose censorship? All these people resigned from posts, but it feels like a lack of forsight IMO (though, of course, hindsight is 50/50). If I was tasked with trying to balance a LITERARY award going off as intended with massive concerns about the host nation's reaction, at a certain point I might just say "I could go do anything else with my life instead" and let someone who's more pro-censorship take over. IDK, I have no aspirations to do great/important things, only things I can defend to myself, so maybe others have a harder time walking away from event organizing than I do.
