Juicy chronicle: meet the neo-luddites warning of an AI apocalypse
- slater 3y ago"Juicy chronicle"...?
- charlitos 3y agoA long and rich chronicle about the #neoludites. They are growing groups that fight not only the development but the acceleration of #AI. #TheGuardian releases this juicy text to learn more about his ideas. I like the contrast, I value it as part of the debate. Speaking with friends, I commented on the possibility that soon anti-AI rebel groups will be able to articulate physical attacks against large #data centers. It's not something original. We have already seen it in science fiction films (Transcendence / Terminator / Matrix... others) And here, in this text, the proposal jumps out, in a slightly more elegant way, for now... "close the computer farms where AIs are trained." Says a researcher from #Berkeley.

- xanderlewis 3y ago> Hilton has said on his podcast. “They won’t be swapping out Christopher Nolan for Dali or Martin Scorsese for Midjourney, but fat will be cut from the great labour steak.” ...they mean DALL・E, don't they? Without wanting to sound too harsh, I feel like these kind of slip-ups (which seem to happen fairly frequently) expose how uninformed many of the journalists who cover these things are.
- slater 3y agoHow would DALL・E make sense in that sentence?
- xanderlewis 3y agoHow does Dali? They're talking about replacing existing human artists with AI systems ('Martin Scorsese with Midjourney'). They certainly won't be swapping anyone out for Dali, since he's no longer even alive. What they meant was swapping out Christopher Nolan for DALL・E. ...perhaps you hadn't made the connection between Dali and DALL・E — I didn't immediately.
- slater 3y agoI get what you're saying, but what weirds me out is that the latter - scorsese & midjourney - are ostensibly comparing creatives (tortured re: midjourney, but still...), whereas DALL・E is... a small, mobile, trash-compacting robot. Which doesn't fit with Christopher Nolan unless it's some reeeeally odd, ham-fisted criticism of Nolan's movies...?
- slater 3y agoChrist, i just realized... i'm mixing up DALL・E vs. WALL・E never mind me, haha...
- gregjor 3y ago> Eliezer Yudkowsky, a 44-year-old academic... An "academic" who did not attend high school or college, and does not work at a university. > Yudkowsky was once a founding figure in the development of human-made artificial intelligences – AIs. Nope. Technology will certainly continue to disrupt the labor market, as it has for centuries. The rate of change increases. Some jobs will evaporate, people will get displaced. Nothing new in the article, just sensationalism.
