Having just started another hiring round and reviewing resumes, it's clear to me there are definitely good and bad ways of self promotion in a resume.
The purpose of a resume isn't just to present a list of companies and dates, it's to get the candidate to next interview stage without annoying the hiring manager, and then to be a useful reference document in the interview itself.
We don't have more than a few minutes to scan through any particular candidates resume and decide to progress or reject, and a resume that doesn't immediately express why the candidate should go to interview is a bad self promotion.
The resumes I like best avoid waffling paragraphs of information without clear highlights of relevant skills (the information is usually there, it just doesn't stand out against the background text), and stick to simple dot points of clear personal achievements and demonstration of skills relevant to the position being applied.
It's frustrating how many quite possibly great candidates hide themselves in their resume and are subsequently dropped into the too-hard basket.
