- andrewstuart 3y agoAn awkward silence descends on the normally chatty HN.
- readthenotes1 3y agoThe author has a lot of time
- nopassrecover 3y agoPosted fairly recently off-hours for the US, but it’s a well presented article and a good read. Great convo starter over a few drinks
- ttyprintk 3y agoI don’t know whether murmuring will increase when I bring up the fourth 6: six-pack abs.
- MichaelRo 3y agoWell, it's a silly outlook, just like the title say. Dating is much simpler: our pretentious minds makes us feel attracted by around 10% of opposite sex figures. If we lower our bar a little (like with alcohol), this goes up to about 30%. Assuming independent probabilities, the likelihood of a match (both him and her liking each other) is at best 0.3 * 0.3, thus about 10%. My preferred ground of picking up were clubs, there's music, there's alcohol and unlike bars there's dancing so the perfect opportunity to engage in a conversation with the purpose of eventually leading to a date. But armed with the knowledge on probabilities above, I knew it wasn't going to be easy, requiring on average some 10 attempts to get one (in ten) success(es). "Success" defined as collecting a phone number which I can later call to ask her to a date in the city. Which by some reason also had a 50% chance of making it or not to a second date (afterwards the odds of sticking are much higher). So the most important thing in dating success is persistence. Not the creepy kind, which most men seem to be experts in, if the girl doesn't like you, move on: there's plenty of girls. Statistics eventually run in favor of you.
- evdubs 3y agoThere are plenty of 5 5 5 women out there. Keep your heads up, gents.
- rudyfink 3y agoI've always thought a website with sliders for mate preferences would be really helpful for folks. I get that it could get really complicated to do correctly, but even a fast and dirty version could be really interesting. Perhaps, it might even encourage people to be interested in math.
- Mountain_Skies 3y agoOKCupid had tons of controls and questions to optimize match making. Then Tinder came along with "swipe left, swipe right" and completely changed the industry.

- ttyprintk 3y ago5’9” Monaco billionaire Laniado died during penis enlargement five years ago. 32% of Monaco are millionaires. How far was he trying to go?
- sheriffofpaddys 3y agoNow this is an important question
- kennethrc 3y ago> A 6" wiener is even rarer than being 6' tall. Something something genetics/racial/... something, gotta be, right?
- beardyw 3y agoThe absolute redeeming factor in this is the unrelenting drilling down into how to interpret stats. If it weren't for the subject matter it would be a good introduction for statistics education.
- sheriffofpaddys 3y agoHaha thanks, was a lot of fun
- Mountain_Skies 3y agoDoes this mean politicians will start rambling on about inflation being good because it means more men in the six figure income category?
- JohnBooty 3y agoThis article was fun, and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately (through no fault of the author's own) this dovetails with incel doctrine which tends to state that the dating game is unfairly rigged because only the top N% of men (in terms of body, income, whatever) have any chance whatsoever with women.
