As someone who just wrote their own extension for HN, I think that's the right way to go about things. Tables are such a pain in the ass and I there were multiple times where I had to talk myself into 'staying the course' and just getting it done rather than starting from scratch with a more sane approach. I think if you could create a nice minimalist table-parser base it would be useful for any future browser extensions.
